From its Lluvia skin care line to the way it seeks to truly educate people (and not just push products), the company always seems to get it right.
This innovative spirit is fully present in the new Liquizon product line. To put it bluntly, I'm genuinely impressed with Liquizon. When I got my hands on the product samples, the first thing I did was pop a capsule in my mouth and chew on it (rather than just swallowing it). That's because the only way to know the potency of herbal medicine is to taste it.
And boy, did I taste it. |

Much has been written about the skin, there are thousands of skin-care products available, and skin care is a billion-dollar industry. This is another one of the areas where we are bombarded with information based on someone's bottom line and profits. To get some perspective on our skin and how it should be treated, let's start with the basics.

You probably have no idea how much sunscreen to put on to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. Use the new "rule of nines" to help.
Grab your sunscreen and squeeze out a line from the tip of your index finger to the base. Make another sunscreen line on your middle finger, from tip to base. Researchers say this is just the right amount to cover 9 percent of your body. So, for each one of the following "9 percent" sections, use two fingers of sunscreen. |

This approval, of course, comes from the same federal agency that claims skin care and cosmetic products containing toxic chemicals aren't dangerous because the skin doesn't actually absorb anything.
Like most drugs, the approval of this patch for depression is based on the absolutely loony (and scientifically dishonest) idea that depression is caused by a lack of synthetic chemicals circulating in the brain. All disease is just a matter of chemical deficiency, according to Big Pharma and the FDA. |

| Before you buy sunscreen or other skin care products, check the ingredients. If they include green tea, you just might boost your defense against skin damage, skin cancer — and maybe even wrinkles.
Whether you get your tea from a teapot or a tube of sunscreen, you can help your skin win against cancer.
Drink green tea or rub it on your skin before or after any PUVA treatment. This combination of the drug psoralen and ultraviolet light, often used to treat psoriasis, increases skin cancer risk. Tea helps counteract it. |

Paula's Choice
I developed and launched Paula's Choice skin care in 1995, and am proud of how the line has grown into an exciting array of effective yet affordable products. I originally had no intention of offering hair-care products (because the marketplace was already bursting at the seams with options), but it was a constant customer request, so I decided to offer a shampoo/body wash-in-one and a daily conditioner. A major point of difference for both of these products is that they are truly fragrance- and irritant-

Algae Active ($38 for 7 0.07-ounce ampoules; total of 0.49 ounce) attempts to seduce you with the algae-and-thermal-plankton-from-the-deep-sea-are-essential hype, but they're none of that. Algae have water-binding and anti-inflammatoty benefits for skin, but there are no species of algae in this "intensive" product, only plankton (which has no established benefit for skin). This gimmicky product isn't bad for skin; it's just not worthy of your time or money.

Although proper skin care is important in the treatment of acne, acne is not caused by uncleanliness, but is more likely to be a result of overactive oil glands.
Although more than 20 million teenagers suffer from this disorder, acne is not just affecting kids anymore—it is also affecting increasing numbers of adults. While teenage acne most commonly occurs on the face and/or upper body, adult acne is usually limited to the chin and jaw line, and involves fewer, but possibly more painful, blemishes. |

Dior the main thing here is to convince you this generic, water-based serum is worth the splurge. The sorbitol and algin can create a slight tightening effect, but the after-feel is somewhat tacky and the effect is strictly cosmetic. Meanwhile, skin is shottchanged of ingredients that, while not tightening, actually have benefit.

| Darphin even left out fragrance components, which is a breath of fresh air given that almost every other product in the line literally stinks with fragrance. This is a worthwhile product for all skin types looking for a lightweight serum. It is not recommended for dry skin around the eyes (you'll want something emollient).
© Myrrh Aromatic Care ($75 for 0.5 ounce) follows the same path as most of Darphin's Aromatic Care products and assaults the skin with several irritating volatile oils, including lavender, myrrh, and balsam. This sunflower oil-based moisturizer is not recommended. |

In the world of skin care, cosmetics chemists have thousands of different ingredients at their disposal from which they can create a vast array of products with an almost limitless range of textures and performance traits. Hair-care formulations by comparison do not have that scope. There is only a mere handful of ingredients that can clean hair or condition it. Hair is very specific about what will cling to it and what you can use to clean it. The truly insane disparity in the prices of products from different lines in no way reflects differences in the products. |
| For the scalp, vitamins would be rinsed off or brushed away before they had a chance to be effective. For skin care, most vitamins do perform well as antioxidants, but in hair-care products they just aren't around long enough to perform that function, especially under rinsing or the heat from styling tools. While there is impressive research pointing to the effectiveness of antioxidants for skin, there is no such research in regard to hair care.
Anti-irritants and soothing agents are ingredients known for their ability to reduce inflammation. |

Recent research in cosmetology indicates that vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and free radical scavenger for the skin, and acerola extracts are now appearing in skin care products that fight cellular aging. In addition to its vitamin content, acerola contains mineral salts that have shown to aid in the rem-ineralization of tired and stressed skin, and its mucilage and proteins have skin-hydrating properties and promote capillary conditioning.
In North America, acerola is used for its high content of vitamin C. |

While this is not nourishing in the least, nor a product I would recommend at all for skin care, it is a standard leave-in conditioner for normal to dry hair (though not for damaged or very dry hair) that can make hair soft and easy to comb through. It contains mostly plant tea, conditioning agents, detangling agent, plant extracts, preservatives, and fragrance.

Good general hygiene and sensible skin care are especially important for adolescents. The basics include a daily bath or shower and face- and handwashing with an unscented or mild antibacterial soap. It is best for teenage girls not to use cosmetics regularly. Despite advertising claims to the contrary, few if any commercial skin medications have any beneficial effect on acne.

A search of the Web will result in literally hundreds of sites that offer natural products for skin care and the treatment of acne. These products range from facial scrubs and moisturizers to antiseptics and facial masks.
Lipoic acid in particular can help heal acne scars. Lipoic acid activates a transcription factor known as AP-1, which leads to the production of enzymes called metalloproteinases. These enzymes digest the damaged collagen, thus helping erase wrinkles and even scars. |
| Thus, regular application of skin care products containing antioxidants may be of the utmost benefit in efficiently preparing skin against exogenous oxidative stressors occurring during daily life. Sunscreen agents may also benefit from combination with antioxidants resulting in increased safety and efficacy of such photoprotective products (Dreher et al. 2001).
